Book Ideas: The Wolf, by Leo Carew.

This looks might be worth a second look. The cover really catches the eye. Could be a good book for the new year 👍📖🍵

Abstract

A great war has come to the land under the Northern Sky.

Beyond the Black River, among the forests and mountains of the north, lives an ancient race of people. Their lives are measured in centuries, not decades; they revel in wilderness and resilience, and they scorn wealth and comfort.

By contrast, those in the south live in the moment, their lives more fleeting. They crave wealth and power, their ambition is limitless, and their cunning unmatched.

When the armies of the south flood across the Black River, the fragile peace between the two races is shattered. On a lightning-struck battlefield, the two sides will fight – for their people, for their land, for their very survival.

Two sides. One victor.

Book Review: The Beast, by J. R. Ward (2016).

Blurb.

Nothing is as it used to be for the Black Dagger Brotherhood. After avoiding war with the Shadows, alliances have shifted and lines have been drawn The slayers of the Lessening Society are strong than ever, preying on human weakness to acquire more money, more weapons, more power. But as the Brotherhood readies for an all-out attack on them, one of their own fights a battle within himself.

Mary, his beloved Shellan, is by his side and his King and brothers are thriving. But Rhage can’t understand – or control – the panic and insecurity that plague him, terrify him and distance him from he mate.

After suffering a mortal injury in battle, Rhage must reassess his priorities. The answer, when it comes to him, rocks his world… and Mary’s. But Mary is on a journey of her own, one that will either bring them closer together or cause a split that neither will recover from …

Review:

The Beast, by J. R. Ward has been a fantastic addition to the series. It bring the forth a rainbow of emotions with this instalments storyline that it is hard for readers not to require at least one or two Kleenex! Another story of Rhage and Mary has been fantastic, and heart warming as they set out on a new chapter of their life together.

Neither Mary or Rhage thought they would ever be parents, but given the opportunity, the pair turn out to be perfect for the job. Even if the situation isn’t the most ideal. But together the couple manage to open their hearts which are so full of love and compassion that any young that would belong to them would be blessed indeed. My favourite scene however, has to be when their adoption prospect meets the beast that lives inside of Rhage. The way this is handled shows pure imagination and fantastic humour. I have to say it really had me laughing out loud.

Overall this has been a fabulous addition to the Black Dagger Brotherhood series and I would recommend it to any Vampire genre lovers as well as those interested in fantasy romance. I give this fabulous book a rating of 8/10 stars.

er is Mikado Empousa, who discovers that her name denotes her as one of the High Priestess’ of Hecate, the ancient Greek Goddess. Mikado finds out that this is the source of the magic in her blood, and that she is the last of her line. When Hecate gifts Mikado with this knowledge and that of the Kingdom of the Rose, she feels compelled to help her, even though she really doesn’t know what to expect her, even though she really doesn’t know what to expect. The role and character of Hecate really gives the book of mythology feel, and with the whole story outline based on fairy tale of Beauty and the Beast, the story has an incredibly magical feel to it, P. Book Review: Darklands, by M. L. Spencer (2017). Book 3: The Rhenwars Saga.

I am completely stunned and devastated as well as a feeling a whole other rainbow of emotions after reading Darklands by M. L. Spencer. This utterly fantastic book has caused me to invent some questionable excuses which require me to sit down and b quiet! Darklands, is a very dark and heartbreaking novel that takes the reader back into the history of Aerysius carrying with it all of the acts which had come before, tumbling to a crossroads which can make or break a fragile future.

It all begins with the re-opening of the Well of Tears, meaning that Xerys and his darkmage’s had wandered forth into the world once more to do the bidding of the one that summoned them. This time a woman, Azar, a light weaver from the place formerly known as Caladorn. Both Quinlan Reis and Darien Lachlan, who previously had been forced into the obligations of being a Darkmage of Xerys, are spilled forth to perform their duties in ruling with the hands of chaos the lands set before them. Darien given the Malikar and its people, in an attempt to lead them forth from their lives of utter darkness. So many people born who have never before seen the light of day.

Merien, Naia and Kyel return also, desperate to save their homelands from the possible invasion of people from the blackened Bryn Calazar. Stronger together the last three Mages of Aerysius are separated and inevitably make choices sealing their own fates. Merien is the first to be separated, and follows Quin to find Darien. Though as in most cases, it doesn’t exactly go as she had hoped. In fact Merien’s greatest fears are realised when she reaches her destination and speaks with Darien for the first time. As for Kyel and Naia, they find themselves in a harrowing predicament which leaves them with some questionable decisions that may throw their whole destiny from its current path.

My favourite parts of this book is Darien’s what I see as an awakening, as he finds opening to the plight of the people of malikar and how his own blood ancestor was the cause of the devastation to begin with. The author has made his character come to life in each paragraph in a way that made Dariens struggles my own. Feeling his pain, along with Merien, and then feeling the hypothetical sting of the slap across the face she deals him towards the end of the book. It is written so well using a language that just appeals to my intellectual senses!

Darklands is a magnificent novel that has completely captivated my imagination. The characters have all been written so well and with so much depth that each emotion that spills from them is almost palpable. I have enjoyed everything about Darklands, from beginning to end. I would definitely recommend this book to young adults and up, and believe anyone with an interest in fantasy novels would enjoy this book. I give Darklands by M. L. Spencer a rating of 9/10 stars. It really is a worthwhile read.

Book Review: City of Circles, by Jessica Richards (2017).

Blurb:Danu, in mourning for her parents after a disease ravages the circus she calls home, begins a high-wire act with Morrie, a charismatic hunchback who wants to marry her.

But her mother entrusted her with a mysterious locket that will lead her down a path Morrie cannot follow.

When the circus visits Danu’s birthplace, the magical city of Matryoshka, she goes in search of a stranger who may hold the answer to her past.

Will she and Morrie ever be reunited, or will something unexpected be waiting for her in the mysterious city?

City of Circles is a mysterious story which is written in a prose that I found difficult to read. I felt as though I spent more time in mystery than really knowing what was going on. The storyline seemed to jump around a lot and causes a lot of confusion. Honestly it wasn’t until probably ¾ through the novel before I put the pieces together in any sort of order that I could follow.

I did however enjoy the love story. Star crossed lovers, hopes of futures crushed and destroyed but perhaps a love that just isn’t meant to be. One never knows the future of such stories, they are yet to be written.

Overall I would have to say Jess Richards has authored a fairly good book in the City of Circles. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes mystery and fantasy. I give this novel a rating of 5/10 stars.

Book Review: Assassin’s Fate, by Robin Hobb (2017).

The final book to the Fitz and the Fool series, Assassin’s Fate, by Robin Hobb, is a remarkably breathtaking story that had me in genuine tears of sadness and anguish, or laughing hysterically, again with tears, on a number of occasions. This book has given closure to the long journey of Fitz and the Fool, and it is this finality that I think readers will enjoy most. It is a truly fitting ending for two of the most unforgettable characters I have ever had the pleasure to follow.

The book continues the quest to rescue Bee and take revenge on those who have tormented both Bee and the Fool. But they are not alone, having the aid of dragon ships and dragons alike. The tale intertwined with other series written by Robin Hobb and both the Dragons of Kelsingra and their Elderlings as well as the Liveships of Bingtown become participants in what becomes a mission to merely stay alive. It is with the help of these unlikely allies, they are able to bring to an end the evils of the Whites and there Servants.

However, this comes at great cost. There are many casualties and even deaths, each a major blow to both Fitz and the Fool. And it is this loss and sense of survival that forces Fitz to make the decision of sacrifice in order to ensure his daughters safety. Unfortunately for the Fool this doesn’t go as well as planned and a change in circumstance twists fate even further for both himself and Fitz, leaving the novels ending quite heartfelt and unexpected. Even so, the ending is definitely satisfying for those true fans of the series.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the Fitz and the Fool series immensely, being unable to put it down once I began. I have always enjoyed Robin Hobbs creations but she has most definitely out done herself with this series and especially in this the final book Assassin’s Fate. I recommend this book to anyone who remotely like fantasy fiction, or anyone who isn’t scared to use a little imagination. Fabulous read, one which I am sure to read over and over again. Well done Robin Hobb. I give this book a rating of 10/10 stars.

Reading Suggestions – Etched in Bone, by Anne Bishop (2017).

This looks to be a good read according to reviews I have read and the description on Kindle. This is something I’m going to have to add to my reading list. I have never read Anne Bishop but there is a first time for everything 👌👍🙌🤔

Etched in Bone by Anne Bishop.

Blurb

After a human uprising was brutally put down by the Elders—a primitive and lethal form of the Others—the few cities left under human control are far-flung. And the people within them now know to fear the no-man’s-land beyond their borders—and the darkness…

As some communities struggle to rebuild, Lakeside Courtyard has emerged relatively unscathed, though Simon Wolfgard, its wolf shifter leader, and blood prophet Meg Corbyn must work with the human pack to maintain the fragile peace. But all their efforts are threatened when Lieutenant Montgomery’s shady brother arrives, looking for a free ride and easy pickings.

Book Reviews

Book Review: Darkstorm, by M. L. Spencer (2017). Book 1: The Rehenwars Saga.

A refreshing new read, Darkstorm by M. L. Spencer, is intriguing novel delving into the magics of Mage craft. It is set in another time, in another world and mainly of two provinces which can be viewed as “good and evil”. Aseryus being the first place visited by way of Branden Reis, one of the more admiral characters and heros of the story. Branden is one of two brothers taken as children and trained in ways of magic, each brother holding different power in different fields of magic. Both the elite of their class, and both with a hidden past.

This book gives hope and promise to the written word and a vocabulary of more than two syllables. The author has a gift of being able to interest the reader firstly by use of intelligent language, (instead of treating all readers as though they have an intellect of a 6 year old), and then weaving a world of magic and possible disaster with characters that are deeper and more interesting the further into the book one gets.

I did find the novel becomes confusing as the pace of the novel quickens towards the middle. The “revealing” of Merris’s true nature becomes lost in the torrent as the plot continues whirling by. I found myself having to re-read certain sections to make sure I fully understood. However, the character of Quin became my favourite all the way to the bitter end. Although he was unable to make his brother proud he was always able to see the error of his ways and showed that he at least realised his mistakes and felt remorse. I enjoyed watching his story unfold and his sassy personality really shone through in his dialect producing many laughs and strange looks from my husband!!!

Overall I believe that M. L. Spencer has produced a different line of Mage magic, built in a beautiful and mysterious world. The struggles the characters seem familiar at first but veer off in their own unique direction. The novel reads well and fluently, although there are some places where a dictionary will most definitely enhance the readers experience. I really enjoyed this novel with its descriptive flow which doesn’t completely distract from the plot. I also look forward to reading the next novel to the series.

Darkstorm by M. L. Spencer is a fantastic new novel which I recommend to adults who enjoy fantasy and magic. I give it a rating of 6/10 stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
